My dd is in Y5 and loves reading. She can sometimes be a bit stuck in her ways and would really benefit form reading a broader range of books and stories. Our school has no recommended reading list.

Recently she read and loved

  • The Boy Who Made Everyone Laugh
  • Carlie Sorosiak books
  • The Explorer Rundell
  • When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit
  • The boy at the back of the class

What books gems would you recommend to her that she might enjoy and that could also help her broaden her view of the world?

At the age DD enjoyed:

Anne of Green Gables
A Series of Unfortunate Events
Lady Grace Mysteries
Murder Most Unladylike
Michael Morpurgo

If she enjoyed When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit, you could try The Silver Sword and Carrie's War.

At that age I loved Elizabeth Goudge's A Little White Horse!

My 10 year old has just finished “Goodnight Mr Tom” which she really enjoyed. She’s now reading “The Boy In The Tower” and next on her list is “Swallows and Amazons”.

She also really enjoyed the Scarlett & Ivy, the Enid Blyton “St Clare’s” and “A Rag, A Bone and a Hank of Hair”.

We try and mix up older titles my husband and I both enjoyed as well as newer writing. We were both avid readers and handily kept our favourites from childhood.
