Please help me find this obscure book series!

I appreciate this is going to be extremely vague but I have exhausted Google trying to find these books!

-Possibly came out late 90s/early 00s, I remember reading them when I was perhaps between 7 and 10
-I'm sure I got them from the scholastic book fair at school
-I think it was a 4 book series
-sort of set in a school
-I'm sure at least one of the characters wrote for the school newspaper

• there was something about a school disco (or similar) where one of the characters was meant to write an advert or something about it in the paper but instead of writing 'black tie' for the dress code they wrote 'black toe'

-The illustrations were similar to the style that the Gorrilaz band animations look like

Any help would be much appreciated, I'm having a real brain fart trying to remember author or title but I'd love to track them down for my eldest!

I googled it and the ‘The Miss Nelson’ Collection came up but they were published a little later.

I was probably the right age for the series but can’t remember ever reading anything similar myself.

It's not the Mystery Kids or Mystery Club by Fiona Kelly? I think one of them was on the school newspaper.

Fairly sure it's not The Red Spectacles Gang by Gordon Snell but mentioning it just in case.

Wayside School series by Louis Sachar? No "black toe," but a character does try to sell her toes.

There were a set of four books that were novelisations of the Press Gang tv series (ran from 1989 to 1993) - could it be those? The illustrations aren’t as you describe, though.
