Adventure stories with a gruesome twist

DD(6) loves to read stories with a strong element of adventure and fantasy, but particularly ones with a dark or gruesome (but still lighthearted!) twist to them - some recent big hits were Zombierella (a retelling of Cinderella with a lot more death...) and Grimwood. Please does anyone have any suggestions for books along these lines?

These are great suggestions - Lemony Snicket may be slightly too old for her but maybe worth trying!

Was there not a set of Disney stories retold with a twist? I can't remember the name of the series, and I've not read any so can't say if they're suitable for a 6 year old...
