Help to identify a book from my primary school days

Bit of a long shot without much to go on.

I remember reading a book back when I was in primary school, around 35 years ago or so. The main character was a cat, I think a street cat? I vaguely remember there was a bittersweet ending, possibly the cat died and I think the front cover had an illustration of a grey cat on it at night.

I remember really liking the book at the time but for the life of me can't recall anything more.

This sound familiar to anyone?

Probably not, but Jennie is one cat book and my copy had a grey cat on the front. A boy wakes up to find that he’s turned into a cat, and lives out on the street. There’s quite a sadness to the ending I think.

Wasn’t one of the Mog books? He was grey but not a street cat I don’t think.

Blitzcat by Robert Westall, perhaps?
