Slightly specific - planning a horse themed party and instead of a party bag wanted to give a book.

Votes for best horse story for readers age 7-9?

Too young for war horse which gets my vote for 9+

The Jill books, Jill has two ponies etc.

Stupidbonfire · 30/08/2022 12:39

The snow foal is lovely. But probably at the age 9 end of your age range.

younger girls seem to love those unicorn academy books

SaffyWall · 30/08/2022 12:49

The Clare Balding books are lovely for this age - The Racehorse who wouldn't gallop, The racehorse who dissappeared etc.

greywinds · 30/08/2022 12:57

Oooh I read Balding's book about the girl who thought she was a dog and loved it! Thanks these are all great suggestions

Snow foal and unicorn academy look good too, I can see them being hits. I might do a mix of books so perhaps they can swap them.

And I've just found Jill rides cross country which has the Scottish highlands in and that looks great too. So much inspiration!

Claire Balding is a safe bet for this age.

There are some lovely older books such as the Jill books. Many are probably more toward the top of the age range or over though.

Jinny, Fly by Night, the Gillian Baxter or Caroline Akrill books are a bit more mature.

Most of the Pullein-Thompson books would be suitable for a 9yr old but probably a bit advanced for a 7yr old. Likewise the Lolly and Knocker books or Jackie.

I recommend Jane Badger books for information about pony books. On Facebook or there is a website.

Thank you - I'm inspired. I want to rescue a racehorse that won't race and escape to a Scottish castle with it now!

DD adores the Claire balding books so that’s a good shout. She also loves black beauty. She first read it at 8 but I think she’s reread it many times now!

I'd recommend the Saddlestone Connemara Pony Listening School books, for ages 6-10.

FrederickaDaniels · 17/04/2024 18:53

For children aged 7 to 9 years, I advise you to pay attention to the book “Black Beauty” by the American writer Anne Sewell. This famous story about the adventures of a horse called Black Beauty will be interesting and inspiring for little horse lovers. She will introduce them to the world of horses and show them that friendship and loyalty can overcome any obstacle.

piglet81 · 17/04/2024 18:57

Anna Sewell, not Anne. And she was British, not American.

Silver Snaffles
Sadly you may not get that many copies but my childhood memory book .
Any Jill - Black Boy
Any Pullein Thompson

Diplidocus4 · 17/04/2024 19:10

Sorry ,
Didn't read how old this was

galaxywipple · 17/04/2024 19:19

Pony club secrets books
Pony club rivals books
The saddle club books
Chestnut hill books
Canterwood crest books (possibly a bit old)
Heartland books (possibly a bit old)

At last a thread I can contribute too! I have two horse mad children Grin

galaxywipple · 17/04/2024 19:20

Aaaaand I'm nearly 2 years too late. Excellent.

TrtseHkpr · 17/04/2024 19:50

The Jinny at Finmory books by Patricia Leitch are good, might be a bit old for your intended age range though. I still read them occasionally 😅

But Ginger dies...Anna Sewell was English BTW.
