Animal stories for 7 year old boy?

My DS, who has autism and ADHD, tends to gravitate towards non-fiction books but he loves animals. I'd like to introduce him to some 'gentle' story books along that theme and wondered what would work. A lot of them seem to feature girls as the main character which makes him completely uninterested. It's quite frustrating! He doesn't like anything scary. We've got Winnie the Pooh and Paddington and I was thinking about maybe a James Herriot book but not sure which? I remember enjoying the Dick king Smith 'Sophie' series and another one called Animal Ark but can't think of anything similar with boys in or more of a mix of boys and girls.

There is a brilliant book called 'tales of amazing animal hero's' by Michael unwin. It's real life stories of animal bravery. My 6 year old really enjoys it, it's a nice bridge between fact book like a children's encyclopaedia and a story book.

There is also James Herriot Treasury for children which is beautiful.

Enid blyton has a book called Animal stories. Its lots of short stories about animals. My dd loves it and is totally suitable for boys as well.

And for just fiction- Michael Morpugo , the MuddlePuddle Farm series.

Are the Just So stories too young for him? Smile

Try Colin Dann - The Animals of Farthing Wood is the best known, but he's written lots of other animal stories.

And Hugh Lofting's Doctor Doolittle books. Both my animal-loving DC adored them (as did I rather a long time ago). The doctor's young boy assistant Tommy Stubbins might very well appeal to your DS.

Enid Blyton Brer Rabbit stories

Muddy Four Paws

Michael Morpurgo's: Butterfly Lion, Adolphus Tips and many more

The Little Grey Men and also Down the Bright Stream (chock full of nature and animals as a background to a wonderful story)

Gobolino The Witches Cat - touching story about a little cat finding the home he wants.

The Bogwoppit - from what I can remember mystical creatures in a dilapidated stately home

Came on to say Dick King Smith, bit i see you’ve already thought of him. He wrote loads of animal books, not just the Sophie series - i used to particularly love The Sheep-Pig (Babe), and Daggy Dagfoot.

Also, when he’s a little older, Watership Down is a great (sad) book, and War Horse.
