Series like Maze Runner, Hunger Games and the Gone series?

DS is 12 and loves to read. I can't keep up with him. He enjoys reading a series with a few books he can get his teeth into. I'd really appreciate some ideas for a new series we can get him for Christmas.

Ones he has particularly enjoyed include
The maze runner
The Gone series
Hunger games
Inheritance / Eragon
Skullduggery Pleasant
The dark is rising
His Dark materials

As you can see he enjoys fantasy and futuristic apocalyptic type books. As well as mild horror stories!

Can anyone recommend anything in a similar vein? Thank you

There was one that started with Pure by Julianna Baggott I enjoyed it but it was too YA for me to continue.

The other one that is brilliant is Patrick Ness - Chaos Walking

OP, I really recommend;

The Time Riders series by Alex Scarrow - about a group of kids who have to 'save' time by stopping people who are time travelling and messing up history. Starts fairly simply but becomes about a dystopian future and some kind of awful end-of-the-world scenario over a series of... 7? 9? books.

Charlie Higson's Enemy series - these are set in the UK and are about a plague that kills most adult and turns the rest into sort of zombie things that eat children, and about various different groups of children coping with the aftermath and the reasons. There are... 5? 6? books in the series and they're very funny and quite gripping and are full on horror in many places.

Both series were written specifically with teenage boys in mind, but I'm a mid-40s woman and I loved them.

In fact the Charlie Higson Young Bond series is really good too. Much more enjoyable than adult Bond.

He read Harry Potter a few years ago now, he did really enjoy them.

He is currently reading The Enemy series.

He's also read shadow hunters and many more that I can't think of just now!

He prefers the older age range and gets frustrated if the books are too repetitive or formulaic

City of Bones?

“The Enemy” series by Charlie Higson. Dystopian future with virus and zombies and survival take. My daughter who loved Mazerunner series loves this.

The Divergent series (I think the others are called Insurgent and Allegiant)

The Mortal Engines books - ds1 loved everything on your ds's list and these were his favourites.

Also I second the Patrick Ness suggestion.

Oh, and Rotherweird by Andrew Caldecott! It's brilliant. DS1 read it last year (recommended by me) and loved it.

Just the topic l was looking for! Same age DGS who has read lots but not inspired lately. Shall try some of above suggestions, thanks. But, I have got The Hunger Games for him but his mum (who has read it) is not sure if boys his age read it.I see OP son has read it, can I reassure her it's ok, she does think he would like it

I have just seen that The Book People recommend Hunger Games from age 13+ so I will tell her they are fine. She was worried about the violence.

DS read The Hunger Games a couple of years ago now, he was absolutely fine with them, really enjoyed them

He has read and enjoyed Magician but lost interest a bit with the second one. I have them all though so could always recommend them again for him.
