Been reading some Spike Milligan to my wee boy tonight and reminded me how much fun it is reading poems together. Can anyone recommend any good poetry collections suitable for a 4 year old?

Here’s a Little Poem. Collected by Jane Yolen and A.N.Other and illustrated by Polly Dunbar.

Everybody was a baby once by Alan Ahlberg. Genius.

a child's garden of verses (a bit old fashioned but some are lovely)

lots by Michael Rosen

Alhberg books (e.g. each peach pear plum)
Julia Donaldson books

'poems to perform' - favourite with my 7 year old

This.book.is.funny. Like so funny.

Algy met a bear
The bear met Algy
The bear was bulgy
The bulge was Algy.

And many many more.

This one he'll like too...(different book)
Fuzzy wuzzy was a bear,
A bear was fuzzy wuzzy.
When Fuzzy wuzzy shaved his hair
Then he wasn't fuzzy was he?

Not a collection but a series of four seasonal poems by Walter de la Mare, each individual book is beautifully illustrated and produced. Silver (Slowly silently now the moon....) and Snow, would be lovely for winter nights!
They are a bit pricey at almost £7 each, from Amazon or the Book People but would make super Christmas books.

Brilliant thanks! Lots of great suggestions, having to stop myself buying them all now!

Dirty Beasts and Revolting Rhymes both by Roald Dahl are huge hits here.

A Great Big Cuddle by Michael Rosen

Out and About by Shirley Hughes

A Child's Garden of Verses by Robert Louis Stevenson

All well loved by DD1 (4) and well read in our house.

Where the sidewalk ends - an absolute favourite with my daughter since she was 6, and we still read it 3 years on. Lovely funny poems. Bought it secondhand on eBay after a MN recommendation!

Mustard, custard, grumblebelly and gravy by Michael Rosen is a real favourite here.

Also the poems to perform book mentioned above.

We have a ton of poetry books for all ages from little ones up to adults - love a good poetry reading afternoon.

The NT have just released a new book called The Seed that Grew the Tree - it’s a collection of poems; one for each day of the year. It’s already been bought for DT’s Christmas. It’s lovely and I love the idea of working through it over a year

Stars in Jars by Chrissie Gittins, and I Am A Poetato by John Hegley are both great.
