Fully illustrated chapter books or text heavy picture books for 6 year old

Just that really. Looking for longer books to read to my 6 year old, he has good concentration and loves being read to but still really likes books with pictures. We've enjoyed the shorter Roald Dahl books in the larger formats with colour pictures (enormous crocodile, BFG etc.) but I'm struggling to find anything similar. The local library seems to go straight from Julia Donaldson style picture books (more text than picture) to paperbacks with the odd line drawing. Can anyone recommend anything to bridge the gap?

The 13 storey treehouse series by Andy Griffiths is a good cross over. It is chapter books but with illustrations on each page - more like a comic.

We have this box set Its pretty heavy on Horrid Henry, but otherwise short chapter books, with colour pictures on each page.

Michael morpurgo has some short stories that suit that age. Also Jill Tomlinson ( the owl who was afraid of the dark) has some lovely books.

Thanks for all the suggestions will check them all out. Toto the ninja cat looks perfect in terms of text/pictures balance. Any more ideas gratefully received.

Have a look at Early Readers books. I can only think of Horrid Henry and Rainbow Fairy ones at the moment, but I know there are lots!

Following as in the same quandary with my YR DS - I find it even harder with a 4.5 year old as so much of the content would make no sense to him!

The adventures of pug, by Laura James. Two or three in the series, my 6 year old son loves them.
