Cartoon strip style books like Dog Man

My son is a very reluctant reader. He's 7, nearly 8. I was thrilled when he mentioned a book that some of his friends are reading at school and said he wanted to read it too. It's called Dog Man by Dav Pilkey (of Captain Underpants fame). I ordered it, it arrived today and he's read the whole book already! I'm so pleased and want to get him some similar style books to encourage him. The books are laid out in colourful (not black and white) cartoon strip style with not too many words. Can anyone recommend anything similar? Thanks

Can't think of any similar but there's more than one dog man book

Have you seen the Phoenix comic? On sale in some shops but we subscribe as my almost 7 yr old will read it cover to cover each Friday when it arrives. From that we found Bunny VS monkey books, also comic strip but small writing. He also loves my husband’s Pokemon & legend of Zelda comic books; they aren’t so child-like but are perfectly ok content- wise. He’s just now getting into Tintin. Tom Gates books aren’t quite comic style but have loads of graphics in the text that make it much more fun to read, we have worked our way through those too! It’s been a challenge as although he likes reading his interests are totally different to my daughter’s so i’m starting again from the beginning in terms of looking for books!

6yo has just discovered the 23 storey tree house. Loads of graphics and very imaginative. Getting him to turn his light off and go to sleep is now a problem because he'd rather read than do anything else!

Yy Phoenix comic is great, quite similar to Dogman. There are 4 or 5 Dogman books, not sure if you know (,or of you want him to try something different). Some other good graphic style books (ie books illustrated in a "comic" way) are the 13 storey tree house series and King Flashypants - my DS, who loves Dogman, enjoyed both of these.

Thank you! I've ordered the next Dog Man book. Based on your recommendations I've had a look at the Phoenix comic. They have an offer of 4 comics for £1 at the moment so I'll sign up and give it a go. We love the Treehouse books too, but he won't read them to himself. I'll take a look at Bunny v Monkey and King Flashypants. Pokemon comics would be great as he loves the TV series on Netflix!

There are also Corpse Talk graphic books, from The Phoenix series.

If he likes playing games, try finding ones where you have to read cards in order to play. Something like Fluxx (very short and silly) to start with; if successful, look at Smash Up, or Settlers of Catan. Definitely helped DS2 get into reading.

Thanks, I'll take a look. I actually have a brand new Fluxx game in a cupboard somewhere so maybe now is the time to fish it out. I've never played it before so wasn't sure if he was too young. I'll give it a try!

I would second TopTrumps as well.

The bad guys series is good, not quite comic strip style but lots of graphics and different fonts, making for fun reading.
As others have said Tom Gates, 23storey tree house series, king flashy pants, wilf the mighty worrier.
I don’t always buy books from amazon but if you type in the name of any books he definitely likes and similar style books will come up for the recommendations

There’s a Star Wars series that’s quite similar in layout to the Dog Man books too, can’t remember what it’s called but they sell them in Asda

My DS8 is an avid reader but really sucks up anything graphic novel ish. LOVES the Phoenix and Dog Man. There is also a cat kid and some caveman ones by Dav pilkey too.

13th floor tree house series.

He also likes the classics, tin tin and asterix, but those are really dense in comparison.

Bunny vs monkey (from the pheonix team).
