Hi can anyone recommend a good starter texts. she's pretty sure this is what she wants to do in Uni and is particularly interested in sleep and dreams at the moment so if there's a good chapter on that too, it would be helpful.

The ‘For Beginners’ series (now rebranded as ‘Introducing...’ are pretty good. They’re done in a very visual/graphic novel style and provide a reasonable overview. There’s ‘Introducing Psychology’, as well as books on Freud and Jung in their own right. Easily found secondhand (try Oxfam or Amnesty bookshops if you have one anywhere near you).

When I did A-level, the main text was Gross’s ‘Key Studies in Psychology’. Despite being a textbook it’s pretty accessible. It’s basically the original research papers with some introduction, context and discussion questions, from some of the most important studies (the Stamford Prison Experiment, Skinner’s rats, &c.). The current edition is about £20, but if it’s not for a course then you can get an old edition secondhand on Amazon for the price of postage.
