Hi, I’m looking for gripping books to do with thrillers, mysteries or horror for an 11 year old girl. She seems to have moved on from the real girlie stuff and wants to get stuck into a real interesting book. Many thanks

My 10 year old Dd is reading the curious incident of the dog in the nighttime and loves it. Not sure what it’s about but from the cover and blurb it looks like a crime mystery kind of book.

I’ve just looked this one up and it has good reviews. Thanks

Any more recommendations anyone??

I'm not sure if this is her cup of tea (more fantasy) but dd10 loved The Nowhere Emporium by Ross Mckenzie, she couldn't put it down.

Would Ruby redfort be too young?
Hunger games
I'm assuming she's read all harry potter, lemony snicket, percy jackson etc

metalmum15 · 17/10/2017 15:03

newme my dd is currently reading Ruby Redfort, they're very thick books so certainly something to get stuck into!

Hotdoggy · 17/10/2017 21:04

The nowhere emporium sounds good, the hunger games sounds a bit too heavy going for her, but ruby Redford is interesting. Thanks all.

I love Ruby redfort because she's a super brainy girl spy and the books have puzzles and codes to solve

Also the classics like little princess, secret garden, Heidi, railway children, borrowers the Michael morpurgo books if she hadn't read those.
Good night Mr tom and machine gunners.
My dd us 9 but she's a bookworm. Just read a book she really enjoyed called Frozen in Time it won the blue peter award a few years ago.

Try Philip Pullman’s Sally Lockhart mysteries - a quartet of gripping Victorian detective stories, with a strong but credible female protagonist. The first in the series is “The Ruby in the Smoke”.

Going to order the philip pullman from library today, great tip thanks

MrsPnut · 18/10/2017 06:51

My 11 yo has read the nowhere emporium, she has also read this year - Cogheart and Moonlocket by Robert Bunzl, Ned’s circus of marvels by Justin Fisher, The Uncommoners series by Jennifer Bell, The Northern Lights by Phillip Pullman amongst others.

Her favourite was Cogheart and Moonlocket but she would recommend all of the above.

2014newme · 18/10/2017 06:55

Going to write all these down!

We also have The Girl who wasn't there by Karen MCCombie, which is a ghost story with a twist, recommended for age 10 and up.

Has she read the "Murder most Unladylike" series? DS1 loves them and is now stuck into Ruby Redfort.

Could also start on Sherlock Holmes, Agatha Christie or Daphne du Maurier.

AveEldon · 19/10/2017 15:42

The Sinclair’s Mysteries
Rick Riordan

Hotdoggy · 19/10/2017 17:58

Wow! So many wonderful book suggestions. I’ve looked them up and have ordered some for Xmas presents too for her. Thanks to your kids too for sharing their favourite books. Smile
