books to challange 10 year old

My son is a book worm but a bit stuck in Tom gates, he has read all the David walliams..

Looking for something to challenge him this summer holidays but not so hard he just puts it down.

The Cherub series? My son loved them at that age.

Hi me and my niece have both just finished 'The Secret in the Sky' by Willow Lockett. Its about a 13-year-old girl called Ruby Merrygold, who lives with her wicked Aunt Mabel and finds a magical telescope in her garden. When she looks through it she discovers the secret in the sky, where all the Superfolk live that look after everyone on earth. There's Walter Wishbone, the wish granter, Malbert Moonberg, the dream maker and all the fairy-tale characters have all grown up and achieved their dreams, including Peter Pan who now owns his own theme park up there. Ruby is delighted when she is invited up to it to make her dreams come true, by Harrison Hawk. BUT there's just one person stopping her from getting there, her wicked Aunt Mabel.
Will she make it up to the most magical and best kept secret in the world? and if she does, a creepy forest awaits those who enter the sky with fear, does Ruby have fears?
If this sounds like something you're son will enjoy, it is available on Amazon and this is the first in a series which I was delighted to find out. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I'm 27! Hehe. Hope you find some great books for him either way and have a wonderful summer!

The Famous Five, Roald Dahl and The Borrowers all come to mind as books I loved at that age. Harry Potter too!

Ds is 10yo.

He's just finished the Cherub series. He's hesitating about the Henderson Boys, which surprised me because he loves WWII books normally. However he did point out that he wasn't sure they were accurate and he loves accuracy. (The plane at the end of Swallows and Amazons film was apparently 1950s, and he still hasn't got over that )

He's also finished the Alex Rider books. Or he thought he had until today and we found a new one out. Luckily we were in the bookshop to spend his book token so by this time tomorrow I think he will have finished them. Until AH writes the next one, and this one definitely ends with a promise of another!

He also loved Lone Pine Series by Malcolm Saville-those are his favourites.

Another slightly different one he loved was Cue for Treason-another historic one though. (Geoffrey Trease)

Another more recent ones are the Naitabal Mystery ones by David Schutte. They're a group of children who have adventures in their secret society. Naitabal Mysteries He's enjoyed them, but not as much as Lone Pine.

Has he read any of the Michael Morpurgo books, they are good.

Witchend, has your ds read any Biggles? There's a re-issued set cheap from the www.thebookpeople.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/qs_product_tbp?productId=424293 book people and I remember my old copies from my childhood being very popular with dd's friends (esp boys) around that age. (I don't know for certain but would assume they're pretty accurate given WE Johns was a pilot before writing them.)

Sadik yes, he loved the WWI and WWII ones, and wasn't quite so keen on the secret service ones when he read them. Since reading Alex Rider/Cherub he's become more interested in spying so I may suggest he tries them again.
I think they're reasonably accurate on the plane stuff, at least he hasn't complained.

TBH I agree with your DS, remembering reading them myself the WW1 & WW2 ones were much the best :)

My boy liked the Grk books by Josh Lacey.
Also the Young Samurai series by Chris Bradford.
Stig of the Dump was popular too.

I find if I read the first chapter it can often overcome the resistance to a new book if it seems a bit off putting at first.

Shapeshifter series by Ali Sparkes, and Carjacked by the same author. A newish book by Rob Lloyd Jones - Jake Atlas and the Tomb of the Emerald Snake- very Indiana Jonesish. If he likes fantasy you could try the Keys to the Kingdom series by Garth Nix, starting with Mister Monday, or the Seventh Kingdom series by the same author, starting with The Fall. A lot of boys this age ( and girls!) love the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan. Start with The Lightning Thief.
