After A Series of Unfortunate Events

DD, 7, is coming to the end of Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events, which she has devoured. Any suggestion for another great series? Thank you.

If she enjoyed the whole just when you thought it couldn't get any worse, then ... aspect of it, she'll love the How to train your dragon books.

Caroline Lawrence Roman Books. Mine adored Lemony Snicket and are 21 and 18 now. So much better than HP. The other ones they loved were the Michelle Paviour spiritty ones. And David Almond. Also Michael Morpurgo (all).

Your DD must be a very mature and advanced reader btw. DD read Sebastian Faulks and Atonement in Y7 or 8.

My 9 year old loved The Mysterious Benedict Society series.

I haven't read them and I have seen them described as YA.

Just consulted son, he says that they might be difficult to read for a younger child but there's nothing unsuitable in them!

Michelle Paver has gone down well here but his brother at 7 did not like the early scene in Wolf Brother of the father dying and made me stop reading. He read the series himself at about 10.

Garth nix's old kingdom books might also be good. DS2 (7) just finished them and loved them.

DS1 is mad on Lemony Snicket. Has she read Harry Potter? Agree with How to train your Dragon, and Roman Mysteries. Debi Gliori might be worth looking at too (Pure Dead Magic etc).

DD1 loved Wolf Brother at around that age.

First three Harry Potters.

DD2 loved Cornelia Funke Dragon Rider at about 7 and read it over and over again for several years.

Slightly Jones mysteries are also fun.

Thank you all for your very good ideas. I walked into my local charity shop today and found the first 10 Roman mysteries books in perfect condition for £5 so I guess that's what she'll read next. I've also put Michelle Paver on my radar and will take a look at Debi Gliori's Pure Dead Magic series. I was kind of thinking about Harry Potter but DD says "it's boring" - not a fan myeself so think I'll wait until she sees it in the charity shop and actually wants it. Thank you again for all your suggestions.

DS2 has been reading the earthsea books and really likes them.

The Spiderwick Chronicles by Terry Ditzerlizzi (?).

Roman Mysteries are fab, and I hope your DD enjoys them.

My first born was not quick to read and built up his reading stamina slowly. The size of Harry Potter books put him off for years. So he ended up reading them in secondary school and imo got a lot more out of them than his little brother who started on them at 6/7. I read them at the same time and I think he really was able to enjoy the teenage friendships aspect, as did I.

Older books with an element of fantasy have been good for my more precocious reader. He really liked Wolves of Willoughby Chase and its sequel.

Archie Green books might be worth trying. I take she's done The Worst Witch.
