DS2 enjoys readng Diary of a Wimpy Kid books but I would love him to broaden his literary horizons a bit and come into contact with more descriptive texts.

Overall, he's not a particularly keen reader but technically he can read most things.

Any ideas?

Roald Dahl is very good and "silly" in the way that the Wimpy kid books are....but the language used, while not complex is probably more sophisticated and so would be a good introduction into more complex language.

The Twits, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory are both good. Another great book for boys and girls alike is Tom's Midnight Garden by Phillipa Pearce and Goodnight Mister Tom by Michelle Magorian.

He might find those more challenging due to their period settings but they're still very accessible and exciting.
