Picture book story about caring for pets/animals?

I'm trying to find a picture book (story, rather than information) book suitable to read to 5-7 year olds about having/caring for a pet, but my mind's gone blank! Can anyone help me!? Something about Gruffalo/Bear Hunt length-not a chapter book if poss!

Well, it's sort of the reverse of what you're looking for but Children Make Terrible Pets gets some good reviews.
