dd2's birthday is on the horizon, and I'd like to get her a couple of books to go with her big present. She's currently enjoying us reading short chapter books to her - Faraway Tree, Worst Witch, that kind of thing. Only problem is that dd1 is a book obsessive, and we have most of the obvious ones. Can anyone recommend something that might appeal?

How about:

Atticus Claw series (burglar cat turns detective)

Guinea Pigs Online series (school Guinea Pigs with a double life)

Princess Mirror-Belle Collection by Julia Donaldson (stories of trouble making alter ego, good to read out loud and very funny)

Hi. I have recently published a book which my late brother wrote. It's called Norman the Caterpillar and is really rather special. Stephen Fry thinks so too so I'm not being untowardly biased! If you want to get your child a book which will grow with them and one with depth and hidden meaning as well as being witty, heartwarming and heartbreaking which teaches them about love, kindness and being different, I urge you to buy this book. I think it has the potential of being a classic one day. You can buy it here: www.amazon.co.uk/Norman-Caterpillar-Johnny-MacKay/dp/132037493X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1443183630&sr=8-1&keywords=norman+the+caterpillar

My 5 year old has enjoyed all of these:

Pamela Butchart series about primary school kid shenanigans

The Worst Witch series

Pigsticks and Harold series

There are also Winnie the Witch chapter books.

SerendipityDooDah · 25/09/2015 14:54

Oops -- didn't see that you'd already read The Worst Witch ones, sorry!

Clever Polly and the Stupid Wolf by Catherine Storr.

I assume you already have Pippi Longstocking!

Have just bought the following for my 5 year old, but unfortunately have no idea of their popularity. Daisy and the trouble with Christmas, Violet Mackerels brilliant plot, My funny family 5 book set!

If you like Pippi Longstocking then there's also Karlson on the Roof by the same author. Olga da Polga by Michael Bond. We loved all the Humphrey books and the Harry The Poisonous Centipede trilogy by Lynne Reid Banks. ALso just ordered a set of Moomins books for DS for Christmas.

The Violet Mackerel series is absolutely beautiful. Part of a series too. Wonderfully written.

You may also want to take a look at the books by Sarah McIntyre and Philip Reeve which are great fun too.
