Writing a children's non fiction - anyone done this?

If you're not an academic or established writer, and it's just a quirky topic that you're really interested in and researched thoroughly... it would include craft activity instructions as well as facts.

Is there any remote possibility of it actually happening? A lot of non-fiction in the children's library seems to be written by a relatively small group of authors - the same names keep cropping up!

It's a topic I'm going to be researching anyway because I love it, but I thought writing alongside it might be fun!
