Book for nephew/niece I won't see

I live abroad so I won't see much of my nephew/niece when they are born.
I want to give a 'special book' as a gift, one that my sister and her husband can read to the child as they grow up.
My partner gave 'Oh The Places You'll Go' by Dr Seuss to her nephew and I love this idea, it's great for a wide age range, has a good message, and he knows this as 'their story' even though they rarely see each other.

If anyone has any similar ideas I'd love to hear them.

For a girl, Blueberry Girl by Neil Gaiman.

I'm marking my place as this is a lovely idea and I'm going to have a think.

How about a picture book about where you live to help build that bond? That PB then will be forever associated with you.

Have a look at Salvatore Rubbino, who has a 'A Walk in xxxx' series which is lovely. Lots of details to pour over.

Miroslav Sasek's 'This is xxx' serie are just beautiful. They have a wonderful timeless quality about them. If available, you could buy one reflecting where you live & one where your nephew lives.

On the Day You Were Born, by Debra Frasier, is a lovely book. Also might be worth looking at a children's poetry collection, there are some beautiful anthologies that would give pleasure and fun for years.
