Good book about how cars work for 8yo

DD1 loves to know how things work, and she's already amassing quite an impressive collection of relatively basic (so far) books on everything from telephones to the Titanic. Now it's cars. I've done my best 'how an internal combustion engine works' drawings (I'm no artist) and I can do drive shafts, but gears and clutches are beyond me. I need a good book with good illustrations.

All suggestions gratefully received! And quickly, before I find her under the car with my socket set... ;)

For sake of pride, I should clarify I know how gears and clutches work, I just really can't draw them.

Also, I know Richard Hammond has written Car Science but unless it's the best my miles, I'm buggered if I'm giving that twunt my money.

Sorry OP this does not help you at all but what are the books you already have that are good? My DS and DD would like that kind of thing.

I'm pretty sure that Usborne have a cars book as part of their See Inside series.

Off the top of my head (and I can probably only think of 1/3 of what she's got):

Toilets and Telephones

the Titanic one is this: www.amazon.co.uk/Titanic-Disaster-Sea-With-Poster/dp/1429675276/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1338102215&sr=8-1 She's been going back to it repeatedly for nearly 3 years.

How the Law Really Works & How The Economy Really Works from Guy Fox directly (bit old for her but we read them together and I explain a LOT of vocab)

See Inside Your Body

What You Eat And Where It Goes (my very very old copy)

And then there are a couple of books with explosion diagrams that she loves but can't for the life of me remember what they're called, one with electrical circuits and one about clocks.

Usbourne books are great.

If you fancy throwing a fiction book in to the mix this one could be right up her street - story weaved around the invention of the car known as The Tin Snail.

Mij · 06/10/2014 20:49

emmaMBC That looks ace. She's also a bit of a history fan so the WWII angle is right up her street. Thanks.

Oh, in that case she'll love it @Mij !

How it works magazine subscription for Christmas? Loads of ace detail in those. Actually, just looked and they have an Amazing Vehicles special edition, which I think had better go on ds1 Christmas list. They look pricey for magazines, butds1 has had months of pleasure out of his 2 issues. He's 8 too
Also, I'm sorry to say he has and loves Car science (I did get it from charity shop tho'). Body science in same series is also good.Other popular non fiction with DS are the How to make a universe with 92 ingredients and How to change the world with a ball of string books.

wearymum200 · 07/10/2014 19:47

And I've just looked at the Tin a Snail, it looks ace, thank you!

Mij · 07/10/2014 21:06

Oooh I haven't come across the how it works mag. DD1s Christmas list just got complicated! Thanks :-)
