If he liked Holes what else will he like?

DS2 (11yo) is a good reader and I am struggling to think what he will like. I gave him Holes by Louis Sachar, slightly thinking it might be a bit disturbing but he said he had read Boy in Striped pyjamas so I thought it would be OK.

He loved it so much he couldn't put it down. He's really sad he has finished it. SO what else is in the same vein? I was stumped, as I really haven't read anything like it. I think he liked the surprise/plot twists.

TIA

Holes is quite a unique book - if he enjoyed the writing style he might like:

Scorpio Races by Maggie Steifvater
Out of Shadows by Jason Wallace
Once by Morris Gleitzman

He might like the kids books by Carl Hiassen, Hoot is one, can't remember the others.

there's actually a kind of sequel to Holes, called Small Steps. It's quite good (as are all his books actually)

Retropear · 11/07/2014 19:48

Louis Sacher has written several others.

My DS (10) also loved Holes and the film - I thought it was brilliant too! He's read quite a few other ones by Louis Sachar and enjoyed There's A Boy in the Girls' Bathroom, Someday Angeline and the Wayside School stories. Oh and one with a strange title - something like the Boy Who Lost his Face.
Am noting down these other suggestions for him!

As a Holes fan myself, just started the sequel Small Steps - it seems more realistic than Holes, a bit grittier, but equally good.

Louis Sachar has written some other good novels.

Also try War Horse and other Michael Morpurgo books.

Has he read Goodnight Mr. Tom? (M. Magorian)

What about I Am David? (A. Holm)
