I'm trying to remember the title of a book about a boy who made up his own adventures & he had a 'treasure' bag which had carried around that contained various odds and ends in, such as pine cones and bits of string... Anyway it may have been a collection of short stories in one big book.
I know it sounds like a weird book but I remember it being in my primary school library and it was always booked out as it was popular! Have no idea of title or author but would love to revisit it to perhaps read to my own son.

The fantastical adventures of the invisible boy by Lloyd Alexander?

Or the daydreamer by Ian McEwan

Thanks for your reply - just had a look for those, they were published in 1995 and 1998 so sadly way too late, I'd left school by then.
I thought they might have been the 'Alfie' books by Shirley Hughes but having had a quick flick through them in the local bookshop they don't feature the little bag with pine cone/etc at all. Also I don't recall many illustrations (it was one of these old fashioned books with pictures all together on couple of pages) It was in my school library mid eighties so could have been published then or much earlier. Really, really wish I could remember as I spent hours reading and re-reading the stories and wishing I'd be allowed out to make dens and play with dirt with the boys.
