DS would like to read War Horse next (he has a brand new copy in his room and for the life of me I have no idea where it came from Confused). We would read it between us at bedtimes so I can help him with tricky words + themes.

How scary / sad is it? I like the idea of reading it as it will tie in with the WW1 anniversary, but not if it's too much for him. We've read Harry Potter 1 + 2 together and he reads Beast Quest, Mr Gum etc on his own.

no dont

save it - plus if you have to help him whats the point.
its easy with kids to push them into literature that they will savour more when they are older

mopurgo is almost entirely utterly depressing as well

Ah, thanks. I did think it would be too much for him once the story got going. I'll remove it from his bookshelf and he can come back to it in a few years.

He can read Johnny Briggs (yay!) and some Roald Dahl instead.

My two 6 year old boys loved it, but I read it too them. They've had it read to them twice and still ask for it again and I think will read it themselves when they are older.

It's one of those books he will enjoy more when he is old enough to read it himself, and understand a little more about the War.
