What books to read to ds aged 5

I read to ds (5) and dd (2) lots but am wondering what I can read to just ds. We've enjoyed most roald dahl books and I love dr suess, especially the Lorax. We've read the velveteen rabbit which made me cry
So I would like some suggestions of slightly longer stories that I need to read to ds before he outgrows being read to please.

How about Horrid Henry?

My ds (6) absolutely loves paddington bear stories and I must admit that I'd forgotten how well written and funny they are - I used to read them to my oldest dd (now 27). He likes Horrid Henry too.

We've listened to Stephen Fry reading Paddington, so lovely

Mo Willems ' s Piggie & Gerald series.
Hilarious, teach expression... and as entertaining for you too. Plus dc get to act out a role if they want

Yes anything by Mo Willems is fab. Also some of the Just So Stories are fab and the BBC CD of Johnny Morris reading them is lovely.

Thank you, will get on reserving them at the library. Not keen on horrid henry, ds manages horrid fairly well without getting any tips!

I think my sons were five when we read The Wishing Chair books. Lovely stuff!

Have you tried The Mousehole Cat? It tugs the heart strings like The Velveteen Rabbit.

Ooh which Roald Dahl books did you read OP? I've heard some are a bit scary so I'd love to know which ones are best.

We've just read to our DS (5) Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Folk of the Faraway Tree, Charlotte's Web, The Iron Man (bit strange), Mrs Frisbee and the Rats of Nimh (too old for him really), and The Sheep Pig. He loved Charlotte's Web the best.

Ooh I bet ds would love Charlotte's web.
Roald Dahl books we've read are fantastic mr fox, George's marvellous medicine, esio trot, the enormous crocodile, charlie and the chocolate factory and the twits.

Thank you for your suggestions everyone, I am making a list. I found The Scarecrow and his Servant by Phillip Pullman for 25p so we read a chapter of that before bed, ds enjoyed it so it looks promising.

DS2 has recently enjoyed Space Penguins and Dino FC.

The Adventures of the Little Wooden Horse, and Gobbolino (both by Ursula Moray Williams) Old but good! (You may need to reach for those tissues though)

Astrid Lindgren's books are wonderful. The children of noisy village (I think that's the correct English translation), the lotta, Emil and Karlsson books would all suit a five year old.

The little house books by Laura Ingels Wilder are a must read for boys and girls. The Mary Poppins books are wonderful as are all of he OZ books, although some of them are scary.
