Are The Hunger Games books suitable for a 12 yo DD?

My DD who has just turned 12 wants to read these books. Are they suitable for this age? I ask because when the first film came out we didn't like the theme of it and wouldn't let her see it. But now she is saying all her classmates have read the books and enjoyed them.

They're excellent books (books are better than the films IMO) but there are some scary films. I love futuristic dystopias though, both dd1 (almost 14) and ds (almost 12) have read the first 2 books.

The two 12 year olds I know have read and enjoyed them.

My DD who has just turned 11 (Y6) has read all three books in the last week and really enjoyed them. They were included an an extended reading list she brought from school at the start of this term.

Ds read them last year age 10. He has now read the Fear series which I think is pretty scary too? He just likes that sort of stuff and knows it isn't real.

I can read horrible books but not watch horrible things on TV. For me seeing is worse than reading.

You. Old let her read the first book and see what she thinks.

My 10 yo (yr6) dd has read them. She really likes them, didn't find them scary though.

Fine for age 12 IMO.

RockinHippy · 19/01/2014 23:07

My DD loved them at 10 & the fear series too - they will be fine for him

& when she's finished those, you might want to look into the Maximum Ride series - my DD still raves about those now, to date they are still her "most favourite books ever" & she goes back to read them again if she ever runs out of reading - there's a lot of books in the series, 8 if I'm remembering correctly, so will keep your DD busy for a while

Snowbell · 21/01/2014 19:09

never heard of maximum ride but thanks for tip. will look them up.
