Suggestions after Roald Dahl

DS is 4 and has got into RD, we read a chapter or two each night to him and have done The Enormous Crocodile, The Giraffe The Pelly and Me, Esio Trot, James and the Giant Peach and now starting Fantastic Mr Fox. The latter two he chose and while I thought they might be a bit old for him, he seems to be enjoying them (clearly my variety of animals voices is amazing) but thought rather than move onto age inappropriate Mathilda, BFG etc we should branch out to other authors

Who would you suggest? He seems to have a good attention span for RD so maybe we should just do the whole back catelogue?!

All of RD is great, and my son (13) still occasionally listens to the CDs at bedtime.

Narnia books good and Mr Gumm series.

How about David Walliams? I haven't read any yet, but he seems to be getting quite good reviews.

I would say David Walliams too, style and themes are quite similar but then I saw your little one is 4 so not age appropriate yet.

Being controversial, I would leave roald Dahl and chapter books and go back to the picture style book. An older child is going to get far more from these books than a 4 years old. I have been reading them with my 6 year old DS who can also read them himself. I'm glad I waited and wouldn't have read them yet with him but he's been doing one of them at school. I wouldn't read them with my 4 year old. I also think reading them too early spoils the element of surprise and self discovery for the child once they can read themselves.

Viking vik was a series that my son enjoyed as an early chapter style book. Also the magic treehouse series. We read those when he was about 5 and a half.

Dr Seuss Cat in the Hat etc.
great for early word recognition too.
