good books for a 4 year old

My nephew turns four next week and I was hoping to get him a book as part of his present, but as DS is younger than him I'm not quite sure what kind of books a four year old might enjoy. Would welcome any suggestions !

You could try Again by Emily Gravett? It's about a young dragon who wants extra stories at bedtime and gets a little stroppy when his mother falls asleep on the umpteenth repetition...

The Great Sheep Shenanigans (Peter Bently) is another good one. The same author also wrote something called The Great Dog Bottom Swap which we don't have, but a number of people on here have recommended.

My DS loved the Oliver Jeffers books when he was 4, About a boy, Lost & Found, How to Catch a Star, The Great Paper Caper are the ones I can remember off hand

Julia Donaldson books are a hit new one is called super worm but highway rat and also zog are fun too x

DS is 4. Current favourites are anything by Julia Donaldson (although V popular so he might already have these), the Hairy Maclary books, The Dog Who Could Dig, and The Ravenous Beast (which he loves to "read" along to and we have turned into a game for when we have to wait anywhere)

• Winnie the Witch for fiction
• any of the Usborne "flap" books for non-fiction. DD1 (just 4) loves the science one, the space one and the dinosaur one
• a first Atlas

oh brilliant a great range of suggestions, thank you, I had no idea what a 4 year old would like (my son is only 2) and didn't want to pitch it totally wrong!

ds loved the winnie the witch boxset from the bookpeople.
