After CHERUB? Suggestions for 12 year old boy, please

My son, who's 12, is reaching the end of the CHERUB series, which he loved. He has also read and enjoyed the Alex Rider and Young Bond books. I'm looking for something in a similar vein - he is not keen on fantasy and read the first Percy Jackson, but didn't get into it. He's more keen on adventure and spies. Any ideas?

Ds read and enjoyed all those books too - he also enjoyed the Andy McNab series

I assume you're including Henderson Boys in the Cherub ones he's read?

Chris Ryan has a set about the "Alpha Force" which dd1 read. The first is "Survival".

He's just turned 13 and now reading more adult fiction and reference books. He loves history so is surrounded by books on all sorts of eras.

DS2 (12) has been devouring those Michael Grant books.

Neither him or DS1 got into the Henderson Boys for some reason although we do have the first few.

Thanks - what great suggestions! He hasn't tried The Henderson Boys yet - and maybe we'll give those a go but I think I'll look into some of the other suggestions first. For some reason he's not keen to read Hunger Games - I get the impression that he thinks it's too girl-orientated and he's at that age where girls preferably don't exist :(

Both my DSs devoured the Hunger Games - they're 12 & 14 now and read them last summer.

I assume your DS is up to date with the new Cherub series which has a replacement lead character for James.

Might he go for Sherlock Holmes?

Although these books are not exactly the same genre as Cherub, they are absorbing and well written. So in terms of series/trilogies you could have a look at:
Divergent trilogy by Veronica Roth
Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman
Uglies by Scott Westerfield
Maze Runner by James Dashner

A series I haven't reviewed but which I have heard good things about are the Time Rider series by Alex Scarrow.

Be careful of the ANdy Mcnab books - he writes for different age groups and some of the books contain a lot of swearing.

Oh, gosh - where to start? My son will be delighted to hear there's a new CHERUB series - don't think he's twigged that and I certainly haven't.

My DS (nearly 11) dislikes reading story books (okay with non-fiction) and it's hard work getting him to read any, he only seems to read his school reading books and that's because I make him. His teacher says he needs to read more and read good quality books. Any suggestions of what is considered a "good quality" book? Also, do you think it would help if I read along with him, ie him read part and me? He really doesn't enjoy reading and I think it might help if I read along with him.

A book that has worked getting reluctant readers going is Mortal Chaos by Matt Dickinson. The chapters are short (2 pages) and the book has a fast pace. It is ideal for those readers who struggle to finish a book or to maintain their attention. So far Matt Dickinson has written three books, they are of a similar style but they do not have to be read in any specific order.
