Last year we read 'Grimble' and 'Grimble at Christmas' by Clement Freud, which were brilliant. Can anyone recommend any great family reads with a Christmas theme, suitable for 7-10 age range?

The Fourth King by Ted Sieger - a twist on the nativity story with the hapless fourth king struggling to catch up with the other three. Lovely illustrations and a good message about kindness.

The Children of Noisy Village, by Astrid Lindgren (but it spills the beans about Father Christmas!)

Friesops Fables, a new publication has a story is called ' Santa's Verduct' touching story very simple to read and beautifully illustrated. You can see one of the other stories in the book, ' The Pinstriped Panda' narrated below.

I'd really like to buy or have someone buy a copy of The First Christmas by Jan Pienkowski for DD. Has anyone got a copy of this and would you say it was suitable for a 5 year old competent reader.

Other suggestions of Christmas books, Lucy and Tom's Christmas though you might think your DCs may have outgrown it.
Night before Christmas by Christian Birmingham.

Is 'The First Christmas' the same as the earlier 'Christmas' by Jan Pienkowski? We have that one, and it is a gorgeous book. The text is from the King James Version of the Bible - beautiful language, but would challenge most 5 year olds! It may be one for reading aloud until your DD is older, but definitely a book worth buying!

The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey. Lovely story with a nativity slant.

How Father Christmas really works - looks like a picture book but written in a very Richard Scary kind of way. My 10 year old has loved it since she got it 3 years ago!
