What can I read to dd after 'The Faraway Tree'?

This has been our first 'proper' book, rather than picture book. She is 4.5. Something a bit more modern might be good. Any suggestions?

Have ordered Wishing Chair for DS - he's 5. He's also enjoying the proper Alice in Wonderland books now. Roald Dahl is also a favourite - we get the audio books from the library.

Yes sorry, the book we have is all three of them in one. I might try her with some Roald Dahl. She will soon tell me if it's freaking her out.

There are some good Paddington books. Also, would highly recommend the Akimbo series by Alexander Mccall Smith (think that's his name) if your DD is into wildlife.

Famous Five?!

Georges marvellous medicine, The Twits, James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory have all been RD hits with my 5yo DD. I've seen some versions where the book is larger than a standard paperback, more like A4 size, with an illustration in colour every few pages. They look lovely.

I don't have any suggestions for anything more modern as I am stuck in the 70s when it comes to knowing what is available.

DS1 aged 4 won't let me read Faraway Tree books, he finds them too scary, sadly. He likes: Milly Molly Mandy; Meet Mary Kate (and sequels); Matthew's Secret Surprises (and prequel); and he absolutely loves a book called Magic in the Air (weathervanes come alive and fight crime...) which I am sick the backteeth of reading

Have you seen Enid Blyton's Book of Brownies? I read it til it was threadbare at that age!!

Also, some of the Dick King Smith books are suitable for younger readers It's usually pretty easy to tell by browsing the first page or so. Martin's Mice was very good, about a cat who is too kind to catch the mice on his farm.

The 'Sophie' books by Dick King Smith are lovely (Sophie is 4 in the first book, I think)
The Anna Hibiscus series is nice to read aloud & each chapter is a story, which is good for bedtime

Both DS (7) and DD(4) have absolutely loved the Ramona books by Beverley Quimby although not exactly modern (1970s). Also Pippi Longstocking and Rumer Godden Miss Happiness and Miss Flower. the Wizard of Oz and Mary Poppins books (helps that she has seen the films). DD also adored the BFG.

Can you still get 'Mary Mary' books? I loved those as a child. Would second 'My Naughty Little Sister'. And my son loves 'Dear Teddy Robinson'.

I love Teddy Robinson! The one about Santa bringing him as a little bear always makes me well up.....
We read that series plus My Naughty Little Sister around the same time as the Faraway Tree.
