DD going through equine phase.

Has read some of the 'Tilly's pony Tales', dross that seems to be ubiquitous. Have only just managed to wean her off 'Rainbow Magic.

She saw 'Flambards' in Waterstones and because it had a horse on the front she insisted I bought it, and loved it.

She has read the Jinny of Finmory series which I quite enjoyed, (she read it to me at bed time) and I realised why I enjoyed it so much, I think it is set in 19702/1980s. She also enjoyed it as well.

Please tell me your recommendations for broadening her spectrum a little more.
Thanks

I used to love the Jill books by Ruby Ferguson when I was young. Is Pippa Funnell not writing children's novels now?

DarrellRivers · 09/05/2012 20:26

Yes. she writes 'Tilly's pony Tales'
They are pleasant enough but just a bit young.
Yes, I remember Jill, (read those too when I was horse-mad)
Will go look on ebay

Like this. Oh, just realised the Tilly stuff is Pippa Funnell...

mummytime · 09/05/2012 20:32

How old is she? If late primary and actually into horses then the "Pony Club Secrets" ones are good, the first seems a bit older than the later ones (piercing).

Just a warning - others may disagree, but I bought a couple of Jill books in a charity shop for dd (keen reader and horse mad). She was very underwhelmed and reading them myself I could see why, they did feel very dated.

There does seem to be a distinct shortage of good modern pony novels in the Jill / Pullein-Thompson type vein.

DD had a couple of the Siani the Shetland books out of the library but said they weren't much good (pony doesn't behave realistically enough) - however she had them in Welsh & as she prefers reading in English that might have been part of the problem.

Have found an old Monica Edwards so will buy that and see how she does.
What about 'My friend Flicka'? Have remembered those as well

the pullen- thompson books
black stallion series ( think there are about a dozen)
My friend flicka (there is a sequal too, i think called thunderhead)
black beauty
the silver brumby + sequals
national velvet
international velvet
all mostly pretty dated, but charming in their own way. Jill books were dated to me in the early 80's and badly written.
war horse

put any of these titles into amazon for authors.

CervixWithASmile · 09/05/2012 21:04

I loved Fly By Night

babster · 09/05/2012 21:07

I remember loving A Horse Called September by Ann Digby (author of the Trebizon school series). The Enchanted Horse by Magdalen Nabb is quite atmospheric and pleasingly spooky.

Ambrosius · 09/05/2012 21:09

Jackie Won A Pony and Midnight Dancer were my favourites when I was a young'un Grin

Ambrosius · 09/05/2012 21:10

OOH! and I can second the Silver Brumby series!

1950sHousewife · 09/05/2012 21:11

I don't know, I remember adoring Jill books. And dd is loving Jill has Two Ponies. Who wouldn't? There's two ponies in it. Grin

brighthair · 09/05/2012 21:11

Heartland series?
Chestnut hill series
The saddle club

androbbob · 09/05/2012 21:13

My horse mad DD (10) has enjoyed the Stacy Gregg Pony Club Secreets books and her other ones Pony Club Rivals - she was reading one tonight! Worth a look for in the library.

AtAmber · 09/05/2012 21:14

Has she read the other 2 books in the Flambards trilogy? The Edge of The Cloud and Flambards in Summer? I've still got mine, I read them so many times they are falling to pieces!

thenightsky · 09/05/2012 21:15

Clicked thread specifically to mention 'Silver Brumby' series, but been beaten to it.

I also loved Fly By Night and The Team. Was very jealous of Jill and her two ponies.

ObviouslyOblivious · 09/05/2012 21:24

I loved most of the above, and Horses in the gallery

ObviouslyOblivious · 09/05/2012 21:27

bonzo77 · 09/05/2012 21:29

CornishKK · 09/05/2012 21:29
