pony books? but pref no sad endings ...

dd (8), very able and voracious reader, is also obsessed with animals, especially ponies.

She's just read Follyfoot, Jill's Gymkhana, My Secret Unicorn and various other horsey books by Linda Chapman, a whole load of short books by Pippa Funnell which take her about 20 seconds, Pony Club Secrets series, and The Silver Brumby but would like more please

She's very sensitive so I'm wary of many animal books where there are sad endings or a main animal character dies (Michael Morpurgo springs to mind) as she is then devastated and I have to pick up the pieces!

Any recommendations? I wasn't particularly into pony books as a child so don't have a stash of memories to fall back on

Animal Ark? There are a few about horses or ponies. The main character's parents are vets so there is lots of miraculous saving going on. I also used to like Home Farm twins which is about a pair of spoilt brat twins whose parents own a huge empty farm, and every book they cry a bit at some poor animal's disaster and their parents give in and let them adopt another one, which they admittedly do seem to look after themselves.

You might also like the various Pullein-Thompson books - there were three sisters that wrote (Diana, Chistine and Josephine). They may be out of print (or only available from specialists like GGB). The one's I remember are The First Rosette, The Second Mount, and Three to Ride. Their mother Joanna Cannan also wrote A series of books: A Pony for Jean, Another Pony for Jean (etc)

Also another huge favourite of mine was The Horsemasters (can't remember the author - the one I mean is set in a fanatically strict English riding school, and the main character rides a horse called The Toastrack).

Just googled it - I think I mean the one by Don Stanford.

How about "My Friend Flicka" by Mary O'Hara? It's set in Wyoming, and it's beautiful - a totally horsey read without being sentimental. Lovely, lovely, lovely, and the polar opposite of My Secret Feckin' Unicorn.

Most of the ones I read as a pony obsessed child are there already, but also, the black stallion series by walter farley, king of the wind by marguerite henry

The Pony Club Secrets series by Stacy Gregg are very popular in our shop.

What about The Saddle Club books? I seem to remember being obsessed with the trials and tribulations of Stevie, Carol and Lisa. Don't know if they are still available but they were fantastic.

The New Show jumping ones from Stacy Gregg? Then the Pony Whisperer ones (a bit teenagerish, but not much). I would also recommend Pony magazine, as it actually has a lot of words in, rather than loads of ads.
My DD also read all the Pony Camp ones.

Monica Edwards wrote adventure stories with ponies in them. Recommend Wish for a Pony or The Midnight Horse if you want ones that are more pony oriented. Ebay usually has some.

I would personally recommend the Jackie and Misty pony books by Judith M Berrisford they are dated I suppose but good fun reading I was about eight when I read those and they usually end happily

The Good Master is the best book ever.
