My 5 year old ds is utterly in love with 'Mouse Trouble' by John Yeoman and Quentin Blake. We have to borrow it from the library every alternate week and read it nightly when we have it! I ought to try and get a copy of our own.

Yakari series - about little American Indian boy. Cartoon strip style, beautifully drawn & not an alien/zapper/slime monster in sight. Amazon stocks.
