Any princess-type books that aren't too princessy?

DS is 3 this week. He seems to be quite interested in princesses at the moment - always stops in shops to look at princessy toys and books and dressing up clothes etc. So for his birthday I'm interested in getting him a book about a princess or something like that (it would make a nice contrast to all the bloody Thomas stuff people will be buying him!). Any suggestions? I don't want it too princessy, i.e. not just about dresses and fairies and castles and princes coming to rescue them, because I know I couldn't bear to read anything too twee with him. Any cool princesses around? :o

The Little Princess books by Tony Ross aren't all pink and girly - I would describe her as a bit of a tomboy. The princess thing is kind of incidental really to her adventures. It is also a TV programme.

Princess Smartypants by Babette Cole

The Princess's Secret Letters and Princess's Secret Sleepover by Hilary Robinson and Mandy Stanley tell a lovely story of a little girl, Lucy and her penfriend, Princess Isabella.

You Can't Eat a Princess

"When King Cupcake is kidnapped by hungry aliens, it's up to his feisty daughter, Princess Spaghetti, to save him from becoming their dinner. She blasts off into space to show those naughty aliens who's boss"

I would try Zog, the latest by Julia Donaldson. It is about a dragon and school for dragons but a princess features a lot in it. It is a very funny book and my nearly 4 year old DD loves it!

Oh he loves Julia Donaldson books most of all and I was planning to get him a couple more of them, so I shall definitely get Zog.
