Just finished reading Charlie and the Chocolate factory to 6 yr old DS, and he absolutely loved it, now wondering what to read next. If memory serves me correctly the Great Glass Elevator is a bit of a let down. So which one next? We have read the Twits, George's Marvellous Medicine and Fantastic Mr Fox. Which others are of CATCF callibre?

The Witches?

Thanks, have got the complete set from the book people as could not resist, and trying to decide which to give to him next! He was so excited about reading CATCF, and it is by far the longest book we have ever read, so want to keep up his enthusiasm! (Is my memory of the Great Glass Elevator right? Seem to remember it being a big disappointment, but it was a long time ago!)

Could he read the shorter ones by himself? My DD sat down one day and read The Enormous Crocodile; she was so proud of herself.

The Giraffe & the Pelly & Me?

LittleCheesyPineappleOne · 30/09/2010 16:33

Ditto the Giraffe The Pelly and Me - DS1 (5) loved it and it's quite short.

melrose, I'm with you re the Great Glass Elevator, I'm unlikely to bother reading that to the kids, found it so disappointing (but then Charlie is such a hard act to follow).

Have also got the set from Book People! DDs are 6 and 4, and so far we've done George's Marvellous Medicine, Fantastic Mr Fox, BFG and The Magic Finger - all gone down really well. We're now on The Witches, which is scarier than I'd anticipated, the DC are finding it quite thrilling, so perhaps not one for bedtime...

My absolute favourites as a kid were Charlie, Fantastic Mr Fox and Danny Champion of the World, closely followed by James and the Giant Peach (had them on cassette too, listened or read them dozens of times), so I suspect one of those will be next!

Was also going to say that lovecheese's idea is a good one - I'm tempted to leave some of the shorter ones just now and see if DD1 will have a go at them herself.

'Georges Marvellous Medicine' every time.

Danny is a fabulous story but too much for a 6-yr-old I think. Maybe worth getting the DVD (Jeremy Irons & son) before reading it, although it doesn't exactly stick to the plot but it is a charming film
