ds1 (13) is currently racing his way through the Tales of the Otori series
the covers look very girly, but they're not at all girly inside! I know it can be tricky to find novels for this age group especially when they're not particularly emotionally mature (step forward, ds1 ) but this seems to be fitting the bill
