How are you planning to spend Christmas?

Me and my other half like to spend Christmas Day at home. I’ve only got my mum so she’ll come over for the day and Boxing Day is usually spent shopping in the sales.

Just the two of us for Christmas and Boxing Day. No family nearby and we can't stand Christmas anyway so don't make a big thing of it!

We usually go away for 2-3 nights between Christmas and New Year, just somewhere in the UK that takes 1-2 hours on the train. A relaxed little city break maybe. Then a quiet NYE, and it's time to get excited about January!

Away in a lovely laid-back hotel. Eating, drinking, wrapping up well and walking on the beach, chilling out in general.

Pfftotheolddays · 14/10/2026 21:51

Big family Christmas. Mostly adults, we all get on well and don’t see a lot of each other. Couple of nice teens - otherwise champagne, great food, mucking in and catching up. Lots of traditions. We’re lucky in that there are no rows, no one wants to be difficult and everyone wants to have a nice time, a bit of a rest but don’t mind doing the washing up type thing. Lie ins, lazy breakfasts, Christmas telly then pack the car up and head home on the 28th.

ETA - teens not ours. We are obviously childfree!

CoolPlayer · 14/10/2026 21:52

First one seperate he may have the children for a big family meal, so may just be me an the cat eating chocolate (me not the cat lol)

We will spend Christmas Day at home and then walk over to my mums for presents and pudding in the late afternoon. Boxing Day is also sales. New year is with the MIL and SILs.

My brother died this year, we have spent Christmas together last few years, so unless I receive any invite probably alone. I dont know anyone else who will be alone to maybe suggest meeting for a while.
If warm enough probably a short walk. I have mobility difficulties due to rheumatoid arthritis.
Hopefully see a friend before and after Christmas day. Very little family now but grateful I have got to my age and always shared Christmas before.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 14/10/2026 22:16

We're going to Lisbon for four nights. Indulging ourselves by staying in a ver' nice hotel. We really are the childless/child-free cliché!

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 14/10/2026 22:18

We're a long way from family, so will do a trip to see them either early December or early January (after the schools go back).

There's a fabulous local caterer who does Christmas food all prepped and ready to go in the oven. Which means a relaxed morning, and minimal washing up.

Breakfast of croissants, stocking presents, get dressed, main presents, lunch, call parents, seafront walk if the weather is amenable. After the walk we might have room for pudding. Probably won't need much supper. There's usually a film in there somewhere, and always the Crash Test Dummies' rendition of Jingle Bells.

We are in an a unusual situation this year in that we have no family commitments - no children,no surviving parents, my only sibling and his family will be abroad with his in-laws (DH is an only) so we can do exactly as we want. Admittedly after a few glasses of wine, we booked a holiday to the Caribbean! Five days in Barbados including Christmas Day, then we board a cruise for 8 nights (smaller adults only ship, not one of those awful mega monster floating theme parks). We’ve never been away for Christmas/New Year before or to the Caribbean and I’m really excited. Another cliche childless/childfree couple (I do think you can be both).

I’m sorry for your loss.

Sounds lovely. We will definitely have to do something similar one year.

Sorry to hear about your brother x

Thank you. It was quite quick and a rare condition we had never heard of, PSP, with no treatment. And now the awful grief.

Tiddlywinks63 · 16/10/2026 10:36

i decided a couple of years ago that no longer was I going to slave over Christmas so I do absolutely nothing. No Christmas dinner, no decorations, presents to DGCs only (adult DCs in full agreement).
I think tat after nearly 50 years of hating Christmas it’s time I suit myself. DH doesn’t mind.
So, this year it’s steak and chips with bits and raspberry panna cotta for pudding.

Tiddlywinks63 · 16/10/2026 10:37

@JenniferJean that’s so sad, sending you love and hugs x

Lightlyshatofficechair · 16/10/2026 10:37

Debating whether to solo travel for a month in SE Asia or stay in London with my partner and go for a curry (partner can’t come travelling as he works a lot over the Christmas period)

jay55 · 16/10/2026 13:36

Waiting to hear when we’re off work for Xmas and once announced I’ll book a holiday.
I’ve no immediate family left and no obligations.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 19/10/2026 08:24

Happily home alone with my pets. Family too far away to visit in passing and pet sitters understandably hard to get, so generally spend Christmas quietly. It'll be nice.

squashyhat · 19/10/2026 09:01

Staying in a hotel close to DH's family for Christmas night and Boxing night. They have lost a Dad/Grandad, Mum/Grandma and sister/mum in the space of 3 years (Dad actually on Christmas night and the others both this year) and this will be the first time since all 3 have gone they will be all together at Christmas as my BIL feels he can now cope (he has the most space). Plus 5 young kids. We will all chip in with food and help. DH and I are retired so have plenty of time for it to be 'just us' so we are going to embrace the chaos and escape when we need to. Besides which it's my birthday and I would rather not dwell on being a year older!

Berlinlover · 19/10/2026 09:05

My partner and I are staying in a hotel from 24 to 27 December. The hotel does a three night Christmas package.

Me too. 🎄

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 19/10/2026 17:42

By myself, feet up in front of the telly, with copious food and drink. Next year I WILL book time away.

CleanShirt · 19/10/2026 18:40

I'll be visiting my parents and brother (also childfree by choice) at the seaside for a few days. Lots of good food and lots to drink!

TheeNotoriousPIG · 19/10/2026 19:09

Even though it's not technically my turn to work this year, I will go in for a few hours. Although the cows might not know that it's a different day, I do wish them a "Merry Christmas/Nadolig Llawen" 😁

I quite like the peace and quiet and order of the milking parlour, and it's like I always say, our cows need milking twice a day, every day, including Bank Holidays, Christmas and New Year! That, and it's an excellent way to get out of enforced socialisation (or, in the case of the chap who milks when I'm not there, he does it to get out of the way of his wife and daughters being in his way in the kitchen!). He usually brings us leftover turkey legs and things, as he has a sideline in providing people's Christmas turkeys.

LadyHexham · 21/10/2026 11:24

Just me and him alone at home.
We will go for a walk in the morning, maybe go to the pub, nice lunch then feet up.

Bliss.
