I booked my first ever solo holiday!

Post divorce / house move and I desperately need to sit on a sun lounger with a book and a beer after the worst year of my life.

Going to Santorini mid October so hoping it's still sitting outside weather.

Absolutely cacking it! I can be a touch socially awkward so wouldn't just go up to someone and start a conversation.

Any tips wise people?

I did that in Rhodes in June, you'll be fine.

Well done! I'm trying to do the same. Husband of 25 years is going off cycling with mates so I'm going solo. Keep putting it off as I'm nervous as hell...

If you live happily by your self, why would it be different on holiday? I travelled solo for 20+ years (before I got too frail to go much of anywhere 😁) and always enjoyed my experiences.

I had this theory that most couples, after two or three days of coupledom craved company, any company. So I'd be virtually hijacked some evenings. I think to give them a bit of a rest from each other.

@user1471453601 my husband left me 8 months ago so everything solo is very new to me!

Sorry to hear that, I hear Santorini is beautiful. Just checked it out for myself but couldn't find anything in my budget.

ZenNudist · 21/08/2024 19:34

This sounds idyllic. Enjoy it!

I think I got lucky, and going out of season. Got a beachfront hotel with breakfast for £400 for 5 nights!

Are you going with a solo travel company? There will be lots of other people in the same boat!

Nope! I looked at a few but they were pricey compared to doing it myself. And I didn't want to be stuck with people if I didn't like them 🤣

There are a few groups on Facebook if you want to make some friends before you go. I joined two for Rhodes and met up with other solo travellers whilst there.

CleanShirt · 21/08/2024 19:39

Great tip @Doggymummar , I'll do that!

Good for you OP, you will love it!

helpfulperson · 21/08/2024 19:44

Manage your expectations - if you don't talk to anyone other than staff for 5 days it doesn't matter. Great if you do, but if you don't you'll still have a fab time.

CleanShirt · 21/08/2024 19:46

That's my train of thought @helpfulperson. Made sure the hotel had a restaurant in case I didn't fancy venturing out.

I’ve been solo once to Madrid and was in a tourist area. I was fine with activities on my own. Breakfast at a the hotel was fine. Lunch time out there were quite a few singles around but I felt lonely out in either the hotel or properly out in the evenings.

BCBird · 21/08/2024 22:34

Good for you OP. Have a fantastic time

AtmosAtmos · 21/08/2024 22:40

Sorry I should have offered a suggestion on the eating (if you find it hard) of buying something nice and eating in your room or room service. I’m sure loads of people are ok with eating solo.

Normally have a late lunch out and about then wine and snacks in the evening on the balcony.

Gorgeous! There are some nice hikes with amazing views just along the way to the city. I stayed at Pelagos a few years back and did a yoga retreat there. There is a really cool second hand bookshop in Santorini. You can spend hours in the little shops. Find beautiful cafes with stunning views out to sea and have an aperol spritz for breakfast haha. Find a lovely place for dinner with sunset views one evening if you book ahead.
