Childfree - how did you find MN?

Many years ago I was out with a group and a couple of mums were talking about a few threads and the bun fights happening on them. They showed them to me one was about school gate cliques and the other breastfeeding in public toilets. It was a fascinating eye opener for me especially the school gate chatter but after that lunch I forgot about MN until I was searching for how to get that musty smell out of washed gym clothes. I saw a thread complaining about a neighbours renovation and got hooked 😁

Ooh good thread! So I found it because… I worked there! V briefly at the start of my career, doing web admin type stuff, started reading the threads and still here 10 years later

Andylion · 08/06/2023 12:28

I was on another message board that had frequent references to MN so I thought I’d pop over and see what all the fuss was about.

Not only am I not a mum, I am also not in, nor originally from. the UK.

SouthCountryGirl · 08/06/2023 12:32

As above - frequent mentions on another board

fitzwilliamdarcy · 08/06/2023 12:35

Screamed at the Michelangelo. 😂

I was on an australian step parent forum which closed down years and years ago, i missed it and so googled step parent forums and found a thread on mumsnet. Still here years later.

MN carried me through two full threads of losing my DM. It was such a journey. ❤️

LorraineInSpain · 08/06/2023 12:41

I genuinely don’t remember. I think I probably Googled something, had a look around and then stayed.

HenriettaTheVIII · 08/06/2023 12:44

@TedMullins oooh you did 👀

I found it from references on the Australian Essential Baby forums (now everybump). I'm pretty sure it was the penis beaker thread - I'm low class that way haha.

I was on a different chat room where a thread from here was linked. It was about a bridezilla and groomzilla who were equally obnoxious about the gifts they wanted and from whom. It ended up being pulled up twice at least where the op would give great updates. After that I was hooked.

The op had been asked to do a portrait of the b&g but that didn't count as a present. She also had to get expensive gift on top of that. Another man had been asked to bake 120 muffins which also didn't count as a wedding gift. They got talking and both pulled out of the weddings so the couple got neither the cakes, photos or other requested gifts.

LiveJournal (makes me feel old)! I can't even remember which community it was. Or if they were called communities...

Burnamer · 08/06/2023 12:59

Penis beaker. I was hooked

BaruFisher · 08/06/2023 12:59

I came to find out how to help my friend who had just had her first baby (and had a useless ‘d’h- now exdh)
I don’t post a lot apart from on books, but I enjoy a good lurk.

Relationship problems. I was Googling and some threads came up which I found really helpful and have stayed. I like the home, property, style and beauty etc but I've also found it hugely helpful in my understanding of children, childcare issues, schooling etc which I think (hope) makes me more empathetic and aware of issues and challenges.

LaylaLjungberg · 08/06/2023 13:06

Mumsnet madness on twitter. Came for a look and was surprised that there was a lot of good humour here.

JorisBonson · 08/06/2023 14:10

I found the relationships board when trying to leave an abusive relationship. Got some amazing advice and support which I'll always be grateful for!

Also screaming it the Sistine chapel.

Years before I had DS I stumbled upon Mumsnet when looking for a very simple recipe for dahl.

Same, around 2016. Think I came back on around pandemic time - MN was sort of in the back of my mind but had never really checked it out before.

musixa · 08/06/2023 16:31

Somewhat ironically, as a result of searching for hysterectomy experiences. A few threads came up in Google so I had a look, and then some of the trending AIBU threads caught my eye and I got hooked.

I'd heard of MN before, as a woman I worked with in the 00s had been on it and would sometimes joke about it at work (she left the company several years before I joined MN and I've often wondered since if she is still on here - her DC would be grown up by now).

I didn't actually join until several weeks of lurking had passed, by which time I'd had my surgery and had been spending most of my recovery time browsing the internet including Mumsnet. I wasn't sure that I would be 'allowed' to join as I didn't have children, but eventually I found other posters mentioning they were childfree, so I took the plunge.

I thought I wouldn't be 'allowed' to post as I don't have children. I got over that idea, though.

I love Buzzfeed and they did this article in 2015 about funny Mumsnet threads.

I joined mumsnet the minute I read the penis beaker thread
