Children and Accidents

My toddler charge who has just turned 2yrs fell today and banged his nose quite badly!! His mum works in A&E as a doctor so came to have a look at him and she thinks he might have broken his nose. The poor wee mite was in an awful state and gave me the biggest fright ever and I have looked after children for 16yrs.

How do children always manage to do that, he fell against the table in the playroom, just one of those things but I still feel sick at the thought of it??

Poor you, and him!

I broke my nose falling off the toilet onto the corner of a radiator when I was two, but it hasn't done me any long term damage! Children's noses are still quite squishy at that age.

oh mollycat thats awful for all of you. I suppose as an A & E doctor she has seen it all the time and has some perspective on these things just happening.

I looked after a school aged child when I first started who eventually had their own accident book, so frequent were the trip/cuts/grazes - they were just clumsy and fell over fresh air . They were the same at home - parents didnt bat an eyelid, just signed the forms!

Accidents happen, and that squishy little nose will be fine, like Missus said!

You poor thing Mollycat, it's awful when charges hurt themselves, you tend to feel really responsible even when it was just an accident don't you.

Just texted his mum to see how he is, she thinks its not broken but very badly bruised, she reckons two black eyes tomorrow. He was unsettled this evening but she dosed him up on calpol and nurofen and iced him again and he settled to sleep fine. Hope he is okay for his mum tonight as her DH is working and she is home alone with him and 5 week old baby.

Ah well these things happen, will get some interesting looks tomorrow at Gymboree!!!

Just an update, my charge spent this morning in A&E getting his nose checked, it is broken but it was a clean break so to speak and there is no other damage they are concerned about. Lots of calpol/nurofen and TLC to be given but he just spent that last 2 hours running around like a mad thing in the park.

Dont think he is too bothered by it.

Oooh ouchy poor mite but these things happen.

don;t forget because he has had to have a hospital visit you are supposed to inform Ofsted (don't forget your incident report for your files). Ofsted will advise you if you have to advise anyone else - ie Environmental Health or Riddor.
