hi, i'm a new member and would really like your help with this.
Can our future au pair take a second job? she has suggested she might look for a job in bookshop or library on her days off.
what are the pitfalls/problems with this? are there any tax/NI issues?

does your au pair manage on the pocket money you give her? we are going to pay just above the average recommended amount for London.

thanks, rosa

Stargazey44 - she should have told them that she already had a job and ticked box C on a P46/new starter.

Get her to complete a New Starter Checklist for you now. Keep that on file.

You could register as an employer but that is likely to mean you would need to report payroll... so using software or a payroll company (NannyPaye do a 6-month subscription).
Could ask the New Employer Helpline about your reporting duties when only paying £105 a week: 0300 200 3211.

Make sure she understands that when she does other work, she needs to tell them that she already has a job. She will then pay tax on her earnings and will be able to claim back when she leaves the country. www.gov.uk/tax-right-retire-abroad-return-to-uk

nick is correct, you do not have to register as an employer if you are paying less than £113/week.

I insist on seeing a payslip if mine get a second job and keep it on file to check the tax code is correct. I'd offer to call up the agency and sort out yourself.
