Do you mean how many times (as an employer) did I check a nanny's references before employing the nanny? Well, I had three nannies and I checked references for all of them. First nanny, we were living abroad and she was Polish so ended up checking references with a British woman who lived in Belgium and an American woman who lived in London (expat families who kept moving). Can't exactly remember for the others but their references were definitely checked by phone.

Always check references, usually would want to check two.

Once by an agency. No one ever checks my references - they just take them as gospel. Not sure why

I've been a nanny for 24 years, I have had 7 long term permanent positions and various temp positions, (mainly with ex-employers).

I think that 4 agencies checked my references when I first registered with them and I tend to go back to them when I am looking again, they do tend to follow up my most recent reference.

I have only had two employers follow up on my written references verbally and one of them was through The Lady magazine so no agency to fall back on.

Well the Parent has checked all my references verbally twice? Within two weeks?

Is it a problem? Sounds perfectly normal to me. I had one conversation with one referee and two conversations with another referee, plus emailed a third referee.

I check all references once, but if I needed to check again i would. Either you should be reassured that the family is making sure you're right for eachother? or be very afraid of entering a situation where you're micromanaged, and constantly checked on.
Which do you feel it is, having met family?

annh · 18/06/2010 14:06

Can you ask why she has felt it necessary to check each reference twice? Did she ask the same questions each time or was she clarifying some earlier responses? As a nanny employer, I have to say I was always happy to give references for previous nannies but I would be irritated by a potential employer who called more than once and would probably be asking my nanny if they really wanted to work for this family.

Page62 · 18/06/2010 14:36

only called references once each but i normally speak to at least 2 of the families they have worked for

I never take written references and though all nannies i have employed were via agencies, i always spoke to the parents myself.

But i only call them once, but normally those conversations are for 20 minutes plus....and have always been grateful for their time

Missus84 · 18/06/2010 15:25

Maybe she thought of extra questions she wanted to ask, or perhaps wanted to be doubly sure they were genuine refs and not just you getting your mum to pretend?

frakkit · 18/06/2010 17:19

I don't actually know! I assume people check my refs....

I reckon she just wanted to ask some more questions. Or maybe she made a mistake and thought she hadn't checked them?

StarExpat · 18/06/2010 17:27

I did this - but 2nd time was to say thank you so much for the great reference and I'm so happy I chose the cm I was checking refs for. Turns out that's not usually done. I was just a bit over excited.

chitchat07 · 18/06/2010 17:36

Perhaps they were just checking to make sure the references were genuine? Not with regard to nanny references, but I know someone who checked a reference and it was 'glowing', but on further checking the company details were false and that person hadn't actually worked for the company - the number went through to a friend of the applicant!
