Have got a short list of aupairs,3 very good canditates.
A swedish 20yr old who is an aupair at the mo in uk.Gd refs from host mum.
A French 19yr old who has been aupair in Ireland,Fluent in English, Gd refs from Aupair family.
A 23yr old German, Amazing refs from Swimming school(taught 3-12yrs) 3refs from Summer camps, personal babysitting refs and scout club leader refs. She has not been an aupair and wants to stay for the shortest period out of all of them.
Im torn as would like someone who is used to aupairing but at the same time they will come with expectations from previous family.I would also like someone who speaks French, but she is the youngest.
Who would you pick? Thanks in advance for help

Are you able to meet the Swede if she's already in the UK? How long do each want to stay, and why are the first two switching families?

Totallyfloaty35 · 31/05/2010 11:04

The first 2 have finished their contracts with the families and want to try different countries/areas.The Swede finishes her contract end of July. The French girl has just finished her 1yr contract.
Want them to stay at least 6months preferably 9m.
Could meet the Swede, she is other end of country but is poss. She in Sweden for half term though.
German girl has had lots of offers and wants us but needs an answer by end of week so she can join her 2nd choice family if we go with someone else.
Really im so fed up of looking for aupairs...something always goes wrong

Why not the French if she's available now and a French speaker like you want?

Or equally why not the Swede/German?

Missus84 · 31/05/2010 13:51

Personally I would go with the Swede as she has au pair experience, good references, you could interview her in person and she is willing to stay longer. A big generalisation, but I've found I get on better with Germans and Scandinavians than the French (I think they have a similar outlook to the Brits) so that's what would swing it for me over the French girl. However, if you want a French speaker it makes sense to go with her. She's only younger by a year.

floaty, like Missus, I have good experiences with german-speaking aupairs too (attitude to work more professional), not so good with French. Ultimately depends on the candidate - as you know. My experience with Scandinavians were ok to horrific.

I find age no barrier. The best aupairs I had were 19.

For me, a toss up between Swedish and French. Past aupair experience with good references always swing it for me.

How long were both aupairs for? Have you spoken to the families? If not, pick up the phone - ask whether they would hire her again.

If both equal, I guess French, since you want a French-speaker.

I am impressed that you have managed to find 3 good aupairs with references. I am struggling to find one. I am desperate and need an au-pair to start immediately.Where did you find them? Did you advertise locally or go through an agency? I think you should go for the one that you have met if you like her, act fast as the good ones always go!

Well we went with the German girl in the end.Double checked French girls ref and got to speak to her other employers(first ref put me on to them) it seems she had quite serious hygeine issues.

Well done I hope she works out. My last au-pair was German and she was lovely. What about the Swedish girl, is she still available? I find this process so slow. they take so long to get back to you and sometimes it's diffiecult talking to them on the phone. Anyway back to it......

frakkit · 07/06/2010 14:57

I'm intrigued by the hygiene issues!

Did she never shower?

Totallyfloaty35 · 09/06/2010 19:56

Not often apparently! She also stored empty Tuna cans under her bed along with rotting food, underwear etc and threw her teabags at the walls in her room
