Im on day 2 of looking after a gorgeous little boy, yesterday he screamed pretty much all day, today is a lot the same. He doesnt want to be held and fights me away, he loves food but screams when put in the highchair. He seems safer in the buggy and doesnt cry so much but I dont want to leave him in there all the time! Or should I? if he likes it there? I keep trying to distract him but he cant hear me for the screaming! i feel so sorry for him and want to do everything I can to help him settle quickly...any helpful tips or advice?

I had one like this last summer. I didn't try to hold him, kept him in sight, used gentle tones and made sure that toys were within easy reach.

I would let your little guy stay in the buggy if he wants to - especially if it is his own.

Have you got one of his mum's jumpers for him to cuddle and some favourite toys from home? I found that those helped some of the time. Also familiar music - what parents listen to in the car with him and familiar tv programmes. I very rarely use the tv but this is one time it could help if he watches it at home.

Apart from that, time and sensitivity are what works. It's horrible seeing a child upset and not being able to help him. I feel for both of you.

If he is happy in the buggy why not take him out, go to the toddler group or children centre, let him watch until he feels comfortable to join in. Go for a walk to the park. So much easier to settle children when out rather than at home, or I find it better, its easier to distract them when out and it makes the day go quicker if they do carry on screaming!!
