how do I go about finding a childminder/nanny on MN?

Why don't you try gumtree for nanny and your local council website for the list of childminders?
Not sure where in SW London you are but I am in SW London too and we found our (wonderful) nanny on gumtree. And if you are in Wandsworth Council then you can see the list of all registered childminders on their website.

There's a mums wanting childcare thread you can jump onto.

Netmums and gumtree are also good - you can advertise on netmums and just search gumtree. If you want to pay a little then you can join nannyjob (I can run a quick search for you to see if there's anyone that you might like in your area if you give me a candidate description?) and contact candidates too.
