Dearest CM's

Vegan children can they get sick, stomach ache etc from eating a good old fashioned Oven Chip?

Cooked seperatly from other foods

Is this the most STUPIDEST THING you've ever heard.

My mindees mum has just accused me of it, yet all other children in my care were fine!!

I diagnose "SCREW LOSE"

He might have other intolerances. What exactly was in the oven chips?

I'm inclined to agree with you but better to rule out everything.

activate · 07/03/2010 16:02

I don't eat gluten. Some oven chips contain gluten (the crispy sort) so even if I had 4 chips it would make me really poorly for a few days!

But even so if he was hungry what did she expect?!

atworknotworking · 07/03/2010 18:14

gotkidz don't know about oven chips, but just seen your other thread on deposits, sounds like you are having a tuff time atm and just wanted to say hi, have a and tell us all about it

TheProvincialLady · 07/03/2010 18:18

My DS is virtually vegan due to lactose intolerance. He can eat almost all kinds of oven chip, except for some we found that were made with lard. But IF the child wasn't used to processed food of any kind then some of the ones that have a coating might make him feel ill. McCains ordinary oven chips are potatoes and oil, nothing else, but there are a few brands with lots of salt and artificial ingredients.

Blu · 07/03/2010 18:18

Some oven chips - ones called 'home fries' or 'extra crispy' etc have dairy products ion them as they are coated on batter.

That could make a child ill if they were lactose intolerant or something.

But oven chips which are potato and sunflower oil are vegan.

Have you checked the packet?

HIya all,

I have had to deal with Anaphylaxis and Allergies for last 12 1/2 years and Have never come across an allergy sufferer of potatoe, well not yet. I am very careful of what I supply to children due to my son having this life threatening condition and would never give a child anything that I thought would harm him.

Lard is not something I would bring into my house as we as a family dont eat pork or beef either, so she chose me on these grounds as a minder, so really I feel he is picking a fight with the wrong person.

Can CM's actually cease looking after a child purely based on this alone?

gotzkids, it's not an allergy to the potato, some frozen chips are coated in stuff (like wheat or egg or lard) to make them crisp up when you put them in the oven.

If I put one on my skin, I come up in a hive - I'm that allergic.

"Can CM's actually cease looking after a child purely based on this alone" I suppose that depends on your contract? Is this the only issue that has come up with this parent?

These are a list of the ones that make me ill.

McCain chunky homefries

McCain crispy fries

Aunt Bessie's

And I could go on. It is possible you may have given this child something that may have upset his tummy? What were the brand of chips? Obviously you didn't do it on purpose so surely just an apology from you should be fine? And maybe for the future the parent can bring you something you can keep in the freezer in case of emergencies.

gotkidz · 07/03/2010 21:02

hiya navyeyelash

yep it was mcain original they say on pack just contain sunflower oil,

I appreciate it may not be the potatoe alone a person can be sick with.

maybe i 'm looking into it too much!

You can end a contract with due notice for any reason you like. you are self-emplyed and do not have to look after a child you don't wish to

if you did want to sack the parent just say you do not feel that the relationship with the parents is working and that you feel that whilst child is wonderful they would be happier finding a childminder more suited to their needs and with great regret you are terminating the contract with the 1 month notice (or whatever)

navyeyelasH · 07/03/2010 21:11

If the packet says all they have is potato and oil then I think it's highly unlike the chips made him poorly assuming like you say they touched nothing else.

If the packet says anything about coating though be wary, I hope you get this sorted.

frakkinaround · 08/03/2010 06:05

waves to gotkidz

I'm quite spectacularly allergic to potato and the little buggers get everywhere. You have no idea how many things contain potato starch - or maybe you do from checking labels for other things!

It's unlikely he is but to prevent this happening again if you don't decide to get rid I'd advise you to get a list if everything he can't eat and record exactly what you give him and what other children were eating at the time.

gotkidz · 08/03/2010 15:13

Thank you so much you are all completly wonderful and the advice is just what i needed thankyouxxx hugs all roundxx
