Please can anyone tell me what is the normal amount of pocket money for an au pair - live in popular large town - quick and easy access to London. Thanks!

About £65 for 25 hours I would guess. And if you have problems recruiting you could add in a travelcard/bus pass (if AP not needed to drive) and maybe gym membership

£80 for 35 hours (London suburbs),

£65 for 30hrs or £75 for 35- big town on South coast

£70 + use of car + local petrol + gym membership + mobile phone + all UK calls

for 30 hours (plus stuck in the office can you look after the kids once or twice a week - don't call it babysitting unless you want a stand up row with a 12 year old)

DadInsteadofMum · 29/06/2009 15:13

thats in small village (which is why car is essential)

Thanks all. My au pair would only be doing about 8 hours of after school care per week plus one or two evenings babysitting. Then a bit of light housework; max 5 hours a week. Considering how light her duties will be, I was considering offering £50 per week.

Do you think this would be enough?

In my (limited) experience I would say that there is little in an APs mind that links the amount of pocket money to the number of hours pay. If you find someone who accepts £50 (and you are limiting your 'market' by doing so) once they start networking with other au pairs you run the risk of them feeling hard done by and looking for another family. But I suppose it's worth a try

Request a Demi Aupair or give her more to do and pay standard rate which i think is £55-£60. But I expect you will have girls happy to work those hrs for £50 though, especially if they want to fit in study time.
