Afternoon to night care

Due to a change in circumstances, I will need to go back to work. The hours I want are 5:30pm to 12:30. Care would be for my two children....one 26 months & one 4 months....dinner, bath, bed & waiting around for the rest of the night.

Is this a reasonable request? Are there companies which specialise in this type of care? Has anyone successful had this in the past? Any idea of costs?

Hi yes i feel it is a very reasonable request and it is certainly something i would be interested in...

Would this be for each night of the week or just a few as that would certainly narrow it down.

I am now a childminder but was a nanny for 10 years and now having my own family this could be something i would love to do for 2 nights a week.

I am sure you will find someone suitable-depending on where you are will also depend on the ££ side of it.

Most nanny agencies would be happy to assist but if ypou are prepared to do a bit yourself i would start by advertising on gumtree and nanny boards to see what response you get.

Here in Herts i would say for 5.30pm-12.30 would be around £70 nett each evening for someone quailifed and experienced, less if you were happy with a 'sitter' but with a baby that young i would only go for an experienced person for peace of mind.

some childminder are also registered for overnight care, or you get a regular babysitter. theres lots of options but it depends on your budget!

this is the kind of work I do I am a qualified childrens nurse in east midlands and do evenings and overnights and weekends as required for a number of different families and often just one offs.

I charge from £10 an hr (double after midnight)

but you may find a childcare student at a college willing to it for £4 an hr and a uni childcare degree student for £5-£6 an hr or some nannies who have children and partners come in from work early enough for them to collect or maybe nanny brings own child for an hr or so and partner collects the child from your home.

Given the times you require, I would suspect that childcare at your own home is the only viable option.

A nanny agency may know of a nanny who wants regular evening work. It may suit a Uni student.

Childcare provided between 6pm and 2am is unregulated in England. However if you need to use Childcare Vouchers or Childcare Element of Working Tax Credit, then an ofsted registered nanny could be used. As far as I am aware (and from past discussions with voucher companies) there is nothing to say that childcare vouchers can only be used between certain times.

i do this on my days off - one of my semi regular temp jobs is for a airline hostess

she gives me her dates in advance,some times i can do them, sometimes not as days change

if your days are the same every week, then i am sure you would find someone easily

i would have thought someone at yours would be easier than at a cm as then children can sleep in own beds and not get moved

I used to do those hours for a family.

I worked 4 shifts a week and would know which days about 4 weeks in advance.

I had 2 children of my own that came with me and my husband would pick them up after he finished work.

It worked really well and I only left to have my 3rd child.

If I were to do those hours again, I would charge £10 per hour net. (I charged £8 net 6 years ago)

I am in St Albans as were the family I worked for.

I am a childminder and for overnight care (in my home) I charge £3.00 an hour for one child and £4.00 an hour for two children.

Hi, i have also needed childcare for unsociable hours in the past and even though i tried to sort it out myself, i just didn't have the time. I choose a nanny agency called The Kid Company to help me find the right carer for my children. They took care of all the checks and sent me information on suitable candidates, i interviewed 3 and found one to be perfect, she could offer me the flexibility i needed, it worked perfectly.The Kid Company were brilliant, they kept me updated with their progress and i just found them generally helpful, would definatly recommend.(smile)

I would do this

place an ad on gumtree,netmums etc and see what response you get
