cm club: paddling pools

Looking at buying a paddling pool for this summer. Last summer (when I first started minding) I didn't bother, weather was never good enough and mindee was very little. Our old one split so we just used buckets and washing up bowls of water for water play. Fingers crossed we might get a decent summer this year and also my own boys have asked if we can get one. I wondered whether there were any paticular dos or don'ts when it comes to mindees and paddling pools? I guess I will have to write some sort of policy?? Do a risk assessment of course and get permission from parents. Any thing else I should consider? What additional safety precautions should I take?

Also what sort of size would you get? I was thinking of getting quite a big one but not necessarily filling it very deep? Will I have to empty it after each use or would getting a cover for it suffice?

what about a water table and a crazy daisy instead?

You will have to do a risk assessment etc. My kids are happy with a little 3 ring pool (2 pools if necessary), which I can easily empty and fill each day. They do love having a pool, but you do have to be REALLY careful. I wouldn't bother with a decent sized one really - has to be suitable for 8 month old and 9 year old .....

Forgot to say .... they love the sprinkler

Risk assessment definitely and permission from parents. I use one and the mindees love it when I put bubble bath in it. I have oneof those shell things - 1 side for water the other for ball pool.

Sprinklers brilliant too - especially the ones that go side to side - had that on today with ds 4, he's worn himself out in garden dodging it.

Water table sounds like a good idea, will look into that.
