Hi

I am just about to advertise to employ a (very) part time maothers help/nanny to do the morning routine and nursery drop off with my daughter. I am quite happy to employ someone without a childcare qualifications as long as they have some experience and immaculate references. I have been advised to stay away from agencies because of the cost and the likely turnover of their staff.

My question is about a crb check. Can I request one of these as an individual employer i.e if I want to employ a suitable applicant can I obtain a crb? (Obviously with the

No, individual employers can not currently get a CRB check unless you go through an agency.

Hmmmm. Bit annoying! I suppose that is what I get for not using an agency...seems like they have you over a barrel in some ways.

Thanks.

You may strike lucky and get someone who has a CRB check with another organisation. eg my dh is a private music teacher but has a CRB check for other stuff he does.

If she volunteers to work with kids (i.e. church, school, etc.) she can get one for free.

To be honest, I wouldn't be too fussed about it. I think the CRB is overrated. It just means you hadn't been caught and found guilty of anything at the time the check was run. A bit of a false sense of security in my opinion.

Thanks for those points. Will carry on with the advert and the job centre and see who applies. Will probably try on here as well...you never know!

most nannnies who advertise privately or look for work privately are registered with agencies also and therefore have a crb,

but yep crb only as good as the minute its printed and obv there are many paedophiles out there who havent yet been caught!!

Also some agancies will do them for the nanny if they ask them to even if they are not registered with them, I know tinies do this. You may want to ask her to pay for it herself or go halves and then if she is with you for a certain amount of time pay the rest back, as it is not just agency staff that can have turnover of staff. Just because you don't get someone from a nanny agency doesn't mean they will stay longer than someone you do, at least if you get them through an agency and they leave quickly they agency will normlly have a refund policy in place to find you someone else free.

Try advertising on netmums, this is where I found my current 3 day 7-8am job, which sounds like what you are looking for, I do breakfast and nursery drop off.
